Family Friendly It's large enough to get a remote feeling. But the doubletrack roads and many parking/entrance points make riding parts of these trails very easy and doable for kids.

Overview

The Port Gamble "upland forest block" and the new Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park form an area of 4,000 acres bisected with numerous logging roads and trails. The majority of the trails in this network are cross-country flavored and you'll find a range of riding opportunities from easy fire roads to demanding technical sections.

There are maps posted throughout the trail system, so feel free to explore to find your favorite mix of trails and difficulties or use the MTB Project mobile app to stay on track. The area can be quite wet and overgrown in the winter, early spring, and early summer. By summer, things are pretty well dried out and that often extends to the fall.

Need to Know

• These trails are multi-use, including horses, runners, and hikers. Yield appropriately to other trail users.
• Several parking areas provide access to the trails along the East and South border.
• Nearby Kingston, Poulsbo, and Bainbridge Island offer plenty of shops and restaurants to grab lunch if waiting for a ferry.

Description

This ride follows the course of the Stottlemeyer 30/60 Race and is predominantly intermediate in difficulty. Following the course involves lots of turning and navigating to stay on track. There are a few short climbs that are ten-percent-plus and some short downhills. The majority of trails cross rolling terrain and the difficulty and fun comes from navigating tight turns, roots, trees, and the occasional steeper section.

This ride begins from the Uplands Trailhead off of Hwy 104. Head north from the parking lot until the road connects with Service Road 1100. Follow it south to the intersection with the very brief E.T. trail. Hang a right onto the service road and than a quick left onto the technical Hope Trail.

Directly on the other side of the road, you'll enter the Forbidden Forest trail for a twisting and challenging pedal. Head right when you intersect with Twisted Sister for some more winding through the trees. Twisted Sister is less technical than the other trails so far, and it even has a bit of flow towards the end before it spits you out on Service Road 1610.

Head right to The Aviary trail for two fast descents followed by punchy climbs. Hang a left on Service Road 1710 Spur and then a right onto Warlock for more roots. Turn right onto Service Road 1700, pedaling past the intersection with Service Road 1800 and Service Road 1900. After a bit, take the entrance to the Clearcut Trail on your right. Pretty soon the trail splits, keep left to connect with the Clearcut Alternate which feeds back to the first Clearcut Trail after a bit of pedaling. At the exit, turn left onto Service Road 1800. The next section involves a lot of navigating.

Hang a right on the Ridge Trail until it ends at Service Road 2100. Move left for a little bit until you reach the Valley Trail, follow this up until it connects back to Service Road 1800. After a brief pedal to the right, connect with Hyper Space and then take another right onto Outer Limits. When Outer Limits ends on Service Road 1820, follow it left until it intersects back with Hyper Space, turn left and then shortly take a right for Lite Speed, which soon ends back at Service Road 1800 across from Bobsled.

If you've successfully made it to here without any wrong turns, take a moment to congratulate yourself before you head into Bobsled for another twisting pedal until the intersection with Camelbacks and Upper Mirkwood. Follow Camelbacks to the right until you reach the start of Derailed and the fast and fun descent it provides before ending on Service Road 1000.

Follow this road to the left until it connects with Service Road 1900 on the left. A bit of climbing brings you to Lower Mirkwood on your right. This trail is another fine example of the winding XC riding the area has to offer. Lower Mirkwood ends across from Service Road 1200, which will bring you to Ankle Biter for a short-but-challenging climb.

Continue right on Service Road 1000 to where it connects with the Downhell Trail for a very gradual climb. Just before it begins to descend, take the left on The Hood for a spirited descent. Keep an eye out for The Hood Connector exiting to the right that will bring you to Service Road 1200 (you may have more fun by riding The Hood to the end instead). Follow it to the left until you can make a right onto Service Road 1000.

Follow the service road down for a ways until you reach the start of Beaver Trail on the right. This is the last trail in the loop and its rolling elevation provides a nice cool down. Be advised, there is a weird turn to a wooden bridge to watch out for. Beaver Trail feeds into the RC Field near where the ride began.

If you were keeping count, you'll notice your mileage is no where near what the Stottlemeyer 30/60 Race advertises in its title. To achieve those distances, the race makes additional rotations around the center loop of this ride each May. Head back in for a few more cycles, or branch out to ride some of the missed trails if you're looking for more riding.
