Need to Know
This trail is primarily a 'blue' rating, other than the punchy climb at the start which is both steep and technically challenging for less experienced riders.
Description
East Toyon trail starts where
Mark's Canyon ends and
Mark's Canyon North (which is technically a dead end currently) begins, and is also the connection back into the main park from
Toro Loco (aka Valley View) too.
When heading in a northerly direction (ie. down) Marks Canyon, you'll pass a wooden marker post for Black Mountain Trail on your right, then a short distance on you'll see a steep trail going uphill to your left, which is the start/end of East Toyon trail.
The initial climb is pretty steep and punchy, with a couple of tight turns as you gain elevation quite quickly. The trail then starts to level out on a narrow traverse before opening out into a small meadow where there is an obvious Y split (when travelling in the direction shown).
The [alternative] left fork continues up hill and eventually takes you directly to
Toyon Ridge, however to follow the main trail you need to continue on the lower right fork towards the trees on the far side, and continue on the well established trail which traverses the hillside, with some entertaining natural features to navigate, while being aided by gravity for the most part.
Towards the end of the trail it does start to climb again, to finally emerge at a clear (signposted) junction with
East Ridge trail. From here you now have multiple trail options to return to the lower elevation trails and parking lots.
