Need to Know
While some of this trail could be considered 'blue' or an 'easy black' - there are portions where the steepness and exposure do require advanced skills and commitment - good tyres and brakes are a must!
Description
While the other 'black' rated trails in Toro Park are primarily due to narrow and technical terrain, this is very much a traditional 'Downhill' style trail, where the risk is primarily exposure and steep descents, off-camber sections and a rough rutted/bumpy (and washed out in places) surface.
Known amongst the local MTB community as 'Toro Loco' the trail follows an established ridge-line trail marked 'Valley View' on a finger post at the top (see photo), at the viewpoint junction with Simas Peak Trail.
In fine weather the views are excellent - however on the day I rode this, it was in thick fog and drizzle, making a 'Loco' challenge even more crazy!
Toro Loco trail starts on a narrow ridge-line singletrack - after a short distance the main trail turns hard right (do not go straight on) and heads downhill, punctuated with small berms and lip/booster jumps, and on some of the steeper sections currently suffers from multiple stutter/braking bumps.
After about half a mile there is a short punchy climb section (with some off-camber exposure), before resolutely heading downhill again for the remainder of the route.
At just over the headway point there is the first of the really steep sections, which is also loose and rutted - in the dry it's probably not too much trouble for experienced riders, but in the wet it was pretty treacherous, and although there is an alternative 'bypass' to the right which zig zags down the slope, that too is technically challenging due to being washed out and rutted.
A little further on (approximately two thirds of the way along the trail) there is another steep downhill portion - however this is far more manageable being a series of sweeping bermed switchbacks - it takes some commitment, and again portions of the trail (at the time of writing - May 2025) are rutted from rain run-off - but this final portion of the trail is fun and flowy, with one large gap-jump towards the bottom (which has a bypass to the right hand side).
The trail then T junctions with a narrow singletrack (Black Mountain Trail) where you turn left and continue downhill on a more narrow and technical section to end at the junction with
Mark's Canyon .
