A shortcut is available once a month when Bommer Canyon has an open access day.

Overview

This ride has quite a bit of climbing which makes for fun descents. There's over 2,200 feet of elevation gain on this puppy... Nothing technical but there are a few steep sections and the occasional sand around the corner. This ride could probably be done on a cross bike. The ride can be done either counter-clockwise (more gradual hill climbing), or clockwise (most of the hill climbing in the first five miles)

Need to Know

Rangers patrol the area as do the Irvine Police so please stay on the trail and do not ride the closed side trails unless it is open access day.

Description

There are two potential start/end points. 1/4 mile from the Quail Hill Parking area is the Quail Hill Shopping Center with the ubiquitous Starbucks where cyclists like to meet. If you start at Starbucks, head right out of the shopping center and turn right and then left at the roundabout to get you to the Quail Hill Parking area. Start at the Quail Hill Parking area and go up Shady Canyon to Bommer Canyon and take the Bommer Meadow trail to the old Cattle Ranch. (On open access Saturdays you can take Ridge Route to Hogback Ridge to Serrano Ridge Trail and pick up the directions below ).

West Fork Trail is a long climb on a fire road. From the old Cattle Ranch take the Bommer Pass trail to West Fork Trail will take you to the gate just North of the 73. Go under the 73 and you'll be at Ridge Park and on the Bommer Ridge Trail. Stay on the Bommer Ridge Trail until you get to Laurel Spur trial and make a left. This is a junction of many trails and you'll be making a hairpin left so watch your speed.

The Laurel Spur trail will take you to the Upper Laurel Trail. Make a left at the T. After some short but steep climbs to get you back under the 73 you'll get to the Serrano Ridge Trail. Stay on the Serrano Ridge Trail until it turns into the Quail Trail and you can now enjoy the downhill portion of the trail. Watch out for a few turns with a little sand as you go downhill. Stay on the trail until it takes you back to the Quail Hill Parking.
