Need to Know
Do not bike this trail alone. It is technical and remote. You'll see more burros than people.
Description
The trail starts at the intersection of
Turquoise Mine Trail and the
Burro Byway trail. It is one of the most challenging trails in the Senator Wash trail system. It is very narrow with some long climbs of over a mile. You are rewarded for your work with nice views at the top.
It starts out pretty easy though narrow. At 1/2 mile or so it drops into a wash and climbs out the other side. Not always bikeable. You'll then start a gradual climb where you reach a nice little bridge over ravine. At the 1-mile point, you'll reach the Turquoise Mine Road and a switchback in the trail. A fun side trip if you want to go explore the old mine workings and the large rock structure at the base of the ridge to the west.
To continue on Scary, take the switchback that continues to climb. At 1.3 miles in, you reach the high point of the trail and a nice view. The next section is all downhill and can be fast. Control your speed because there are drops and large rocks to avoid. The trail is narrow with tight turns.
At the bottom or just over two miles, you cross the Cistern Road and go through a flat section to the intersection with the
Pi Trail. You can head back on the
Pi Trail or you can go straight on a flat a fast trail along the rim of the Senator Wash. The Senator Wash Rim trail goes to the Senator Wash Long Term Camping Area.
