Overview

This is a 30-mile exploration of the outer perimeter of the north section of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. It can be ridden in either direction, and it can be started at any of the four trailheads or several other preserve entrances. It is an excellent loop for someone who likes easy trails, but has a fair amount of endurance.

Need to Know

Parking at all of the Scottsdale trailheads is free and plentiful. The trailheads close at sundown. Maps of the area are available on paper at the trailheads, in a PDF file at the website, or for a smartphone with the Avenza app or MTB Project mobile app.

Description

The route begins at the Pima/Dynamite Trailhead. Going clockwise, the route follows part or all of the following trails: Axle Grease Trail (all), West Express Trail (part), Stagecoach Trail (most), Dove Valley Trail (part), Hawknest Trail (part), 136th St. Express (all), Black Hill Trail (part), Whiskey Bottle Trail (half), and the Latigo Trail (all).

Part of the Latigo Trail can be bypassed using the Sidewinder Trail (which passes a beautiful crested Saguaro).

Following the route in this order puts the largest elevation gain early in the ride and on gentle grades. One significant elevation gain occurs on the Whiskey Bottle Trail late in the ride. The final five miles are a fun, fast descent on the Latigo Trail, which is nice to end with.

History & Background

This preserve is on the site of Brown's Ranch. The history can be read on the Scottsdale map.
