Need to Know

Stay on the rock! If you are leaving tracks in the dirt, you are a crappy, incompetent, unfit rider who is screwing up. And please stay off the trail when it's wet. Water softens the bonds within the rock, allowing your tires to easily break and erode it.

None of the riding at Slickrock is easy. Bring more water than you think you need, and start earlier than you think you should, so that you finish before it gets too hot.

Description

It's been over 30 years since mountain bikes started riding the Slickrock Trail, and there have been few changes in that time... at least, not since they routed the trail away from the problematic edges. Above Abyss is the first new addition to Slickrock in decades. You can use it as an addition to the main route, or as a shorter alternate. The riding is mellower than on the main trail, with none of those stout climbs and descents that feel like High Intensity Interval Training.

But the new route is hard to find! It leaves the main trail almost exactly one mile past the second Slickrock Practice Loop junction. Leave the main trail and stay on top of the rock fin until you spot the first white dot, then it should be fairly easy to stay on track. 'Above Abyss' ends when it joins the main trail at the head of Icebox Canyon, south of Shrimp Rock (there is also a short spur out to a canyon viewpoint). This end of the trail is probably the easier to locate.

Cell signal is good out there, so use the MTBProject app to help figure it out.

This ain't no beginner trail, but still spectacular even if you have to walk a good bit.
