“This is a nice little singletrack that winds through forest and open hillsides with great views.”
— Joel Wilson
This trail starts at the Audrey C. Rust parking lot and trailhead off Alpine Road. This is also the trailhead to reach the start of Charquin Trail
. The lower part of Ancient Oaks is a newer trail with a smooth surface and a generally pleasant grade. It is popular with hikers.
After about a mile, it climbs out of the forest and intersects with a short spur down to Alpine Road.
The trail continues left across a grassy hillside with nice views looking west toward the ocean. Stay left at the Bo Gimbal Trail
. Soon you'll reach Charquin Trail
, where a left will take you down to the Mindego Lake Trail and back to the trailhead, and right will take you up to other trails and eventually to Skyline Boulevard.
