Description

Meadow Surfer, as locals call it, is a leg of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail in the Wagonhammer area. Meadow Surfer drops 800' in one mile so it is ridden downhill. It is most commonly ridden as a loop with the Elk Trail.

If riding this trail from the saddle at the top of the Elk Trail, follow the old road bed staying to the left of the fence. Leave the road bed for the singletrack at a small cairn and contour across the open face.

At the crest of the next ridge is a Lewis and Clark trail marker. This is the junction with the end of the Elk Trail. Here, turn down the nose of the ridge and follow it steeply to the next saddle and another Lewis and Clark trail marker.

A sharp right turn takes the trail away from the open ridge and into the woods. There is a water trough in these woods and the cows like to laze near it so the trail is often obliterated. Continue descending past the trough looking for good singletrack that crosses the gully to the right.

Now the trail sidehills in and out of the woods and crosses some rock outcrops. The tread can be pebbly and loose in spots.

After a steep run through tall sage, the trail meets an old road bed and climbs gently for 100 yards or so. The bottom drops out again for the last run to the bottom. There is a water trough here and a gate in the fence to cross to continue on the Lower Wagonhammer Creek trail.
