Description

West Fork trail connects FS45 to Chestnut Mountain Loop. The trail is often ridden to rejoin Chestnut Mountain Loop after descending the fabulous Thunder Rock Express trail.

To add West Fork to a larger Tanasi ride, descend Thunder Rock Express and then go left onto FS45. Climb FS45 for 0.8 miles to the West Fork trailhead.

The trail itself was, at one time, a wide doubletrack but the forest is slowly reclaiming all but a narrow bit of trail. It switches back on itself several times as it crosses many large draws and allows riders to look down on the section they've just ridden...or up at what's coming.

This is one of the prettiest areas of the Tanasi trail network and is part of the Black Bear Rampage 40 mile race.
