Description

Cobal Canyon - La Verne is a wide, sandy fire road that ducks in and out of the tree cover, steadily and easily climbing for a mile to a picnic bench and a convergence of trails. Here the tree canopy is huge and quite beautiful and goes by the name of "the picnic bench". Original, I know. Looking uphill from here there are three trails; the right trail is Middle Switchbacks, the middle trail is Sidewinder, and the left is Cobal Canyon - La Verne. Go up the left for a few dozen yards and notice a singletrack that splits right, this is a short-cut bypassing the steep corner of fire road right there.

About 3/4 of a mile uphill from the picnic bench Sidewinder drops down and to the right beneath a white trail sign. Beyond Sidewinder the road continues a sweeping arc around to the left, then slowly starts climbing again until it reaches a low, swinging gate. This is where Cobal Canyon - Claremont and Johnson Pasture Rd meet.
