Description

A steep climb up from Jamestown to rewarding views and a juicy downhill. Public parking, bike racks, and the Mercantile mountain cafe are available in the center of town. From there, head down main street, and cross the James Creek. Continue onto Slaughterhouse Gulch, passing through the gate where you enter FS510.

Pass the historic Blue Jay Mine and continue climbing up into patches of meadow. Pause at the top of the meadow to visit the homestead ruin before entering an aspen grove. From here, the route gets very steep, and the grade gets increasingly more brutal towards the top.

Enjoy views to the south from the ridge top. From here, it is a bomber downhill back to town, or link up with FS Road 509.1 (Flying Squirrel) to loop your way back.

Tried this on gravel bikes 4shits&giggles. There was a fair amount of hike-a-bike, but the dude on the MTB wasn't fairing much better! Next time: MTB! 50mi — 5h 00m
