Hunting is allowed during the fall. Also be respectful of the private land surrounding Milford Ln.

Overview

Twin Towers is a classic backcountry epic along the southern end of the Massanutten Trail. While it does avoid some of the roughest sections of ridgeline trail, there are still plenty of rocks to challenge body and mind. Many locals will know this ride as one of the queen stages in the annual Tour De Berg.

Need to Know

This loop is not for the faint of heart, and is a long day in remote, challenging terrain. There are many rocks that require ridgeline crawling over long distances. There is a lot of walking/carrying the bike along the ridges. There are seasonal services in Fort Valley at the Detrick Country Store, but otherwise few opportunities for outside support.

Also be sensitive to private property along Milford Ln. Riding through from Derrick to the ridge shouldn't be an issue, but note there is no parking and no established trailhead along Milford Ln.

Description

Start your ride at Camp Roosevelt, near the southeastern end of Fort Valley. During warmer months, there is running water in the campground, and year-round pit toilet access. Starting on the pavement, descend down Fort Valley Road towards Kings Crossing, then stay left on SR675 back uphill towards Edinburg Gap. Watch for the natural spring on the right side about one mile from the summit.

Near the summit, you'll see Tasker's Gap ATV area on your left; look for the orange-blazed Massannutten Trail on your right, just AFTER the gated doubletrack ATV trail. The trail will quickly turn to singletrack and climb steeply at times towards Waonaze Peak. The summit will gradually roll over to a descent on the backside of Waonaze (no view), and then continue for almost 11 miles of fast to rolling, ridgeline singletrack.

After around four miles on the ridge, you'll reach Woodstock Tower; cross Woodstock Tower Road and continue on the orange-blazed Massanutten Trail all the way until the descent to Mudhole Gap. There is another natural spring about 0.5 miles north towards Signal Knob if you need water.

At Mudhole Gap, take a right on FR66 (Boyer Rd) and head back towards Fort Valley. Stay left at the intersection with Mine Mountain Rd. The road will turn from gravel to pavement and descend all the way to Fort Valley Rd. Turn right (south) on Fort Valley Rd and ride around four miles to Detrick, then turn left on Seven Fountains Rd toward the ridge. Stay right at the third intersection, Milford Ln, which will turn from a semi-private gravel road into a doubletrack climb to the east Massanutten Ridge.

Once on the ridge, follow orange blazes south approx. eight miles past Indian Grave Trail, Harbon Gap, and Stephens Trail. Watch for a hard right turn before Kennedy Peak Trail. After a rough and rocky descent, the trail will turn to an old fire road and climb slightly back towards Fort Valley Rd, where you started. Once you reach the road, you can either shoot down the paved descent, or stay right and take the last mile of the Massanutten Trail back to Camp Roosevelt.
