Description

This trail starts behind the cabin at Elk Falls Pond, which is located off of the Lion's Back Trail near the intersection with Marmot Passage Trail. As you begin the climb, the trail begins as a buttery smooth, machine-cut trail. A few minutes in, you'll come to the first of three man-made rock benches that cross the scree fields (amazing build quality, very stable). Following the scree fields, you'll come to slab rocks and and switchbacks.

The view from the switchbacks is amazing, and you can see the trail's namesake, Chimney Rock. Past the switchbacks, the trail narrows a little bit as it crosses over some more slab rock with some alternate lines available. Near the top, the trail levels off a little bit. As you cross over 9000' you'll come into a small aspen grove as the trail winds its way back to the Lion's Back Trail.

At the top, take a break and turn around and go back the way you came. Hopefully you paid attention to those slab rocks on the way up. This trail can also be looped either way by using the Lion's Back Trail but it is nothing more than a dirt road so an out and back is a better option.

Intermediate trail until the Elk Falls hiking trail, the switchbacks past this are challenging. Once over the top, it becomes much easier. 1.5mi
