Overview
If you are short on time this ride doesn't take long, and highlights two of the oldest and most fun trails at Candlers Mountain:
Lake Trail and
Trail Too Far, ridden in their most fun directions.
Need to Know
Candlers Mountain has many unmarked trails, so stay focused for turns!
Description
Begin at Snowflex parking lot and head downhill on
Lake Trail. This will come to somewhat of an intersection with a large bridge on the left. Continue straight on the rest of
Lake Trail, which is flatter and requires pedaling over bumpy terrain.
At the next intersection (creek crossing on left) turn right and head up a very steep, rutted doubletrack section to an intersection with
Lake Hydaway Road. Turn right and roll for about 1.5 miles until you reach the top of
Trail Too Far (sign on the left just before you hit pavement/gate).
Head down this to the left, there is an optional "huck to flat" feature here. Continue past many intersections, over some log piles and bridges until you cross a low bridge over a bedrock-laden stream. You'll do a short punchy climb and then turn right in order to access
Lasso trail.
At the next intersection, turn right onto
Lasso (there's a sign on a tree) and eventually follow the creek if the trail gets confusing (Liberty University just installed a disc golf course through this trail). At the fire road, turn right and cross a creek, then next left takes you to Camp Hydeaway.
Cut through the grass and head over the dam of the lake. Stay left after the dam, then take the next right until you pass a gazebo on your right. Follow the gravelly old doubletrack until it becomes singletrack. Head downhill, then stay right at the bottom, cross a bridge, and turn right at the fire road. Go through the gate and turn left at next fire road almost immediately.
Climb
Champion Road until a gate at
Monogram Road. Turn left, taking the optional immediate left on
1971 for a little extra singletrack.
Monogram Road returns to the parking lot.
