Overview

The Double Lake Recreation Area has one of the most extensive networks of singletrack in the Houston area. The network is set up a series of loops that can be linked up to make as long or short a ride as you want.

This ride is the best way to see what these trails have to offer. There are miles of flowing singletrack in the piney forest. The ride is almost all shady which is nice on a summer day and the sandy soils in this area drain quickly making it one of the first to dry out after a storm.

Need to Know

The best place to park is near the lodge. There are restrooms and showers here which are really nice after a hot sweaty ride. There is a really great BBQ place just outside the park. Go ahead... you have earned BBQ and a beer after this ride.

Description

From the parking area, the best way to start is to ride back up the road you drove in for about 1/4 mile until you see the trail crossing sign to the left. This is the start of the singletrack. Head into the trees and follow the trail.

There are a few road crossings on this trail, so watch out for cars. The crossings are well signed and you shouldn't have any trouble picking up the trail on the other side. Follow the DLRA Trail as it winds through the trees until you hit the junction with the Henry Lake Trail. Here make a left and keep going. Stay left at the junction with the Henry Lake Connector Trail and left again at the RCW Trail junction.

After RCW Trail, you are heading back. Stay left at the C Trail and at the Henry Lake Connector Trail. Now things get a little bit tricky. There are a number of trails and roads that intersect, so watch the signs and make sure you find the Trail of Woe. Follow this trail back to the DLRA Trail and then it is a short ride back to the trailhead.

There are a number of points along the way to bail out and head back to the car, so don't worry about over committing. Stay on the DLRA Trail for the shortest loop, cut over on the Henry Lake Connector Trail for a few more miles. Skip the RCW Loop for a 12 mile ride, or ride the whole 15 mile loop.
