Family Friendly This ride is doable but may be challenging for kids. If the roots and twists prove to be too much, the Mid-Loop Trail provides a "bail-out" at two points along the way.

Closed when wet. Do not ride muddy trails.

Overview

A great loop that works your bike-handling skills throughout the twists and turns of the Flintridge Bike Trail as it winds through the trees and vegetation at the George Mitchell Nature Preserve. The singletrack provides a unique experience in either direction you ride it, and it's worth trying both ways to maximize your fun and mileage!

Need to Know

The the trails at Flintridge are bi-directional trails. The singletrack is tight and twisty with vegetation growing very close to the trail, leaving some corners blind. Make sure you announce yourself before entering corners with speed.

Description

From the parking area, head south along the wide and easy Fitness Loop Trail. If traveling clockwise, as mapped, turn left at the split and then look for the start of the singletrack very soon on the right.

The Flintridge Bike Trail takes riders through a few preliminary twists before it crosses over the Mid-Loop Trail. Now that you're properly warmed-up, the root-laden singletrack begins an endless series of snaking twists and turns. Where the trail begins to circle back toward the trailhead it crosses the other end of the Mid-Loop Trail. There's just a mile more of singletrack before the Flintridge Bike Trail ends at the Fitness Loop Trail.

You can head to the right and then turn back to the parking area. But the singletrack you just completed is equally fun in the opposite direction and it's like riding a whole new course. It's well worth turning around and tackling the roots and turns in the counter-clockwise direction. If at the other end you don't feel like you've gotten a good workout, then you weren't riding hard enough.
