One Way Only: This is designated as a directional trail.
Description
Tarantula starts with a short uphill climb to your left, just after you pass through the gate at the junction where Corral Right and Corral Left trails cross over the main
East Ridge Trail.
Once you reach the copse of trees, the route is clearly defined along the top of the ridge towards another small look out point with a bench, before heading downhill on a wide trail to intersect with
Ridgeline Trail for a short distance. Note this wide downhill is quite steep and loose, but there is plenty of room and run-out at the bottom.
Tarantula continues straight ahead at the track junction with
Eagle Crest Trail, and traverses the hillside through the trees on a narrow singletrack.
The trail continues to flow gently downhill along the ridge towards the lake, with good visibility and great views. Once the trail dips into the trees again it begins to get steeper, with some [optional] small drops and jumps, and be aware that towards the very end of this trail [straight ahead] is a very steep and loose section, which really is for experienced riders only. Fortunately there is a clear alternative/bypass to your right, which traverse back across the hillside and connects to the final portion of Cougar Trap trail further down, to finish at the convergence of a number of more challenging singletrack trails in the area (including
Ridge Trail and
Logfather).
You can then exit through the gate to join the
East Shore Trail via a short connector, or ride the final portion of
Logfather to
Hetch Hetchy Trail to return back up the hill.
