Overview
This route is one of the best in the area! The uphill is fairly moderate with some punchy climbs. For what the downhill is, the climb is totally worth it!
Description
There are a few different ways that you can complete this route. Either a shuttle, starting at Coal Bank Pass, or starting where the
Coal Creek Trail ends. Many prefer to park at the
Coal Creek Trail exit so they don't have to make a climb when they finish the descent.
Starting at the
Coal Creek Trail exit, pedal up the highway to the top of Coal Bank Pass. This is not a particularly hard climb to the top, just be careful of cars and people passing. Once at the top of the pass continue on the
Pass Creek Trail. This singletrack starts with a punchy climb, but eventually mellows out. Enjoy twists and turns through beautiful pine forests and wildflower fields. Once you start to reach the top, the trees will open up and you get a gorgeous view of Engineer Mountain. You'll com to an intersection. Left will take you to the
Engineer Mountain Trail whereas right will take you to
Coal Creek Trail.
The trail towards
Coal Creek Trail is primarily a traverse, with the last bit being uphill. There is a fun downhill in the middle that is a nice break from climbing. Once you reach the top, enjoy views of the San Juan Mountains and the valley below. This is a true high country trail with the views to support!
When you start your descent, enjoy open field corners through wildflowers and green foliage. The trail will then take riders into the forest. There is a lot of flow to be found, and it is hard to stop and enjoy the flowers. The Coal
Coal Creek Trail is a combination of technical riding and flowy corners. The trail will take you directly to the parking area.
