Need to Know

This ride provides great opportunities to enjoy the autumn colors. Lots of dispersed camping options in this area, and also a developed campground at Hopewell.

Description

Forest Road 1893 traverses a rugged mountainside southeast of Jawbone Mountain's summit ridge, through dense conifer forests and interspersed aspen glades. This is an active motorized road so it's accessible via e-bike.

Not incredibly technical, some sections are rocky and there's a few rolling water bars that add some flow. The views along the way are impressive, some open vistas where the road contours around sub-ridges, and on the other side up into open meadows approaching treeline.

Plenty of space to park at the access point along Highway 64, or at Hopewell Lake and ride the highway to the turnoff. At the second switchback, where the road crosses Placer Creek, Placer Creek Falls are a short hike upstream.

About 4.5 miles in, the road ends at a berm, and unmarked/unnamed ATV trails continue further into the forest, some leading onto private lots and others eventually linking up with other forest roads.
