Overview

Great way to ride the Continental Divide Trail with minimal miles or elevation gain. Typical out and back route with primarily uphill on the way and a nice, mostly-descending route back to the car.

There are multiple lookouts along the trail looking south back towards Chama.

Need to Know

There is a bathroom on the north side of HWY 17. You can either cross the highway on the trail or you can drive to the Trujillo Meadows turn-off and make the first left towards the train station.

Description

From the parking lot off of the south side of HWY 17, take the Continental Divide Trail heading south. The trail starts off with a few tough switchbacks to gain a ridge followed by a short fun downhill. This short descent is followed by a gradual climb to the halfway turn-around point.

Along the climb, there are multiple lookout points to the southwest of the valley below. The border is marked by a small tough-to-find sign.

Once turning around, it's a fun descent back to the car.
