Description

The Northwest Branch Paved Trail is part of the "Anacostia Tributary Trail System" and connects with the Sligo Creek Trail, the Northeast Branch Trail, the Rhode Island Ave Trolly Trail, and the Anacostia River Trail (East Bank). By itself, this is a pleasant ride and very accessible from nearby neighborhoods. When ridden with the other parts of the trail system, it can be part of a full day, mixed surface ride.

At the northern terminus of the paved trail, a new natural surface trail begins, travels upstream underneath the 495 Bridge, and leads to Burnt Mills Park on Route 29. For more singletrack, cross Route 29 and pick up the Northwest Branch Trail on the opposite side of the river.

Moving north from the end of the paved trail, this is the first of the lung-busting, glutes-testing climbs on NW Branch and the optional Copperhead (high ground) route. This one has no stream crossing at the start so you can get momentum and charge up.
