Description

Starting at Telegraph Trail, look for blue blazes off to the south and descend gradually until you begin to see the hollows off to your right and then, a little further along, to your left. This is the only way to know you are on the right trail until you reach the ridge, where you'll see the bluffs narrowing.

At about 0.75 miles in, the trail begins to follow the Devil's Backbone, a tight and narrow ridge; at one point the trail is as wide as the ridge itself. The ridge climbs gently until you meet Shortleaf Pine Trail. Either use this as a connecting trail to make a nice loop back to Telegraph Trail by turning left, or continue on to the right to meet Artillery Trail.
