Please keep this trail system open by packing out your trash and maintaining the trail as good as you found it. Brake before you turn and avoid skidding.

Overview

This is a full loop of Fantasy Island North Singletrack around the perimeter of the trail system in the Estrella Mountain Ranch community in Goodyear, AZ. The ride begins in the Staging Area with a sample of the trail ahead to the west. A sandy wash and a punchy climb gives a taste of what FINS has to offer.

Need to Know

All of the trails are multi-use, with hikers and dog walkers having the right of way. Alert others of your presence and pass with courtesy.

There is no entrance fee and is open to hikers and bikers only.

Bring more water than you think you'll ever drink in a day and then double it. Be self-sufficient and bring a spare tube, multi-tool and whatever other supplies you may need. It isn't a long walk out, but it'll be a miserable one. Cacti and sharp rocks make quick work of rubber tires if not prepared with sealant or an extra tube.

Description

Ample parking is now available immediately behind the walled structure off of Wester Road. Benches and bike stands are available at this Staging Area.

Enter the trail system near the Staging Area by dropping into the entrance south of the chainlink road guards. You then ride 0.4 miles until you get to an "IN" and "OUT" sign. From there, ride straight west to the junction where several trails convene and branch from; a trail map on a pedestal marks this location. The route continues south from the junction with a couple quick dips and a tricky uphill line to start off the rowdy nature of FINS.

Take a hard left turn east from the junction to rise and descend towards the first climb: Hurts Donut. Designed as a downhill line, this challenging climb takes you quickly into the mountain rise. A hike-a-bike may be required to continue here. Continue down Pastry Pass to a sweet downhill straight into the Boneyard. Use caution when descending Hurts Donut as rocks jut out and uphill traffic is present.

A couple skidded-out switchbacks and a rocky ascent between buttes leads to the base of the Murel's Mile climb. Follow the sign's direction to "Proposal Pass". The northernly route is lined with rocky lines that require full focus. A sustained, but quick 0.2-mile climb gets you to Proposal Pass and the start of the popular wood structure trail, Kimurel's Hurl.

Once on the top, of course, you'll go back down the hill. It is a fast rolling, yet rugged trail. You'll pass through quick wash dips and tight cactus turns before ending up in the Enchanted Forest, a section of trail lined with stuffed animals (quite spooky at night). This section of the trail carries loads of speed so pick good lines. Continue west through the short flat section, which takes you to the exhilarating Rita's Lower Bypass. Off camber rock lines require proper line choice all the way through to the downhill swoop.

The trail then takes you into another junction, at which you head west into the flowy line choice. A swift RIGHT follows into an out-of-seat climb into more rock strewn flats and easy uphill efforts on Roman's Rise. As you approach the intersection of the Rainbow Valley Trail and Roman's Rise, a techy but manageable rock ledge juts out from a wash wall. Take the high line through this as it is already built up with rocks for a smooth transition. Head west immediately after the effort.

You'll traverse the westernmost part of FINS here on Rainbow Valley Trail. A quarter-mile flow trail takes you into a steep in-saddle climb. Rainbow Valley Rd. and other bordering motor trails can be seen to the west. Descend east to Brian's Brink. Take the high line right through the exposed rocks after you pass the large boulder on your left side. It's a rocky, but swoopy effort until the right turn near the ranch house starts the strenuous climb to the top. I recommend staying to the right of the trail as exposed rocks allow for maximum grip away from the soft powder of downhill traffic. Use the leftmost trail on the three turn switchback to the top. Get into your granny gear and maintain the spin to the top.

It's all downhill from here. Known as "FINS Access", little kickers and gap jumps have been built to utilize the high speed. Take care in the sudden G-outs in washes and the loose corners. Cross through a wide wash and keep left down to the access road.

Ride to the exit trail (the second left through the shrubbery) and take it back to the road. A quick shortcut back from where you came will get you back to the Staging Area.

In all, about 5.4 miles, this ride is the perfect route to romp on when little traffic is present. Afterwards, try some of the other inner trails like Exposure and Kimurel's Hurl as they offer more interesting trail options.
