Description
This segment is predominantly forest road although there are some short singletrack sections and a half-mile section on the paved historical alignment of the pass road that is still open to local traffic. Like previous segments of the
Gotthardpass Section II, you'll have beautiful views of the surrounding peaks as well as the tumbling Brenno del Lucomagno creek to entertain your eyes along the non-technical, unforested parts of this trail.
The route begins from the main pass road (highway 416) near the Centro Sci Nordico Campra (Nordic Skiing Center) as a relatively faint doubletrack. After the doubletrack crosses the Brenno del Lucomagno Creek, turn right onto the doubletrack which shortly enters a dense forest along the creek. After about a tenth-of-a-mile, the trail becomes a singletrack which descends steeply still following the creek which at this point is more of a waterfall.
After this short but steep 1/4 mile of singletrack, the trail again becomes a doubletrack that joins the main pass road for 0.1 miles before continuing on the historical pass road which forks to the right. You'll pass through Camperio on this historical pass road.
Just before the historical pass road crosses a small creek to rejoin the main highway 416, turn left on a singletrack paralleling the creek. After a tenth of a mile, turn left onto a doubletrack. This doubletrack passes through a dense forest as it takes you to the Sommascona in the outskirts of Olivone. In Olivone, you can pick up the
Gotthardpass Section III route to continue your odyssey.
