“This road takes you to the bottom of a cog-wheel railway that saves a lot of climbing to start Gotthardpass Section II.”
— Lost Justpastnowhere
For those that want to save part of the initial climb of the Gotthardpass Section II
route, this alternative takes you to the lower station for the Funicolare Piotta-Ritom (Cogwheel Railway). This alternative route follows mostly the paved Highway 2 along the valley - expect a fair amount of vehicular traffic.
The cogwheel railway runs roughly every 40-45 minutes during the summer and climbs 785 m (2575 ft). In 2016, the price for an adult with mountain bike was CHF 24. Be advised that spaces for bikes may be limited.
