A scenic trail along the Cimarron River.

Leslie Kehmeier

Overview

This trail is open to motorized users.

Description [Suggest Changes]

Turkey Trail starts at the Cottonwood Picnic Area and runs east along the Cimarron River. About half way through, it passes through Cimarron Campground. The trail meanders along the bottomland area through big cottonwoods.

The route is doubletrack and slightly downhill going east. Although the trail itself is not exciting, the surrounding landscape is quite beautiful with plenty of opportunities to see wildlife.

About 5 miles into the posted route the trail becomes overgrown but you can head north on 603B and cross the river for some extra double track. Plenty of other double track in the area, can also ride the river bed during the dry times. I rode it in December and could ride most of the river bed. You can head north of the river and there is a gravel road that runs east west that had some nice views. Still found a 17 mile ride in the national grassland but the ride as it is posted is not much of a ride. Lots of sand I would advise riding a fat bike set up tubeless with all the goats heads on the trail. Was stuck in SW Kansas for work and nothing else around, this is an okay place to ride, a fair amount of double track and quiet gravel roads in the Cimarron National grassland. Definitely not a destination spot. If you have more time head to Peublo to the west or Switchgrass in north central Kansas. Dec 12, 2017
