Burns Basin Trail is one of the best trails in Wagonhammer. It skirts the upper end of Burns Basin and is a fun trail ridden in either direction. Once on this trail, it is straightforward to navigate.
From the upper end of Burns Gulch
, Burns Basin crosses the gully and contours up to a low ridge. It continues contouring through a short, wooded section and more low, sage-covered, ridges.
The trail bears left and climbs steeply in the middle of the basin. This climb is broken up by one short hiccup of a downhill and the trail continues up to a saddle.
From the saddle, Burns Basin trail contours briefly then gets steep and loose for a fast shot down a face near a fence. The trail levels out and rolls up and over a hill to come to a final saddle and fence.
This spot is in the middle of the Lewis and Clark
(Burns) trail that connects north to Big Silverlead
. The start of Gas Can
can be seen straight ahead and hanging a left will drop you back down into the Burns drainage.
