An oldie but goodie cross-country trail that loops from Main Lodge at Mammoth Mountain Bike Park.

Part of the Mammoth Mountain Bike Park, so you need a pass if riding when the park is open.

Description

This trail starts and ends in front of Main Lodge, where the gondola soars overhead. The start/finish of the trail is open to two-way traffic, but after a 100 yards, it turns into a one-way trail that makes a clockwise loop. The climb is steep at times, but overall is a nice grade that slithers through pine forests, crosses some ski runs, and eventually loops around Reds Lake. Take a dip if you're in the mood!!

The downhill back to main lodge is a little more direct, but maintains a great flow and will have you grinnin' and pinnin' it. This is a pretty popular trail, and although it's one-way, people often ride it the opposite way (either intentionally or accidentally), so be ready. It was part of the old xc race courses from back in the NORBA days, when the Kamikaze Games were run out of Main Lodge. If you get the chance, this trail is definitely one of the better XC trails in the entire area.

There are lots of ways to customize this ride. I typically ride it from "Off the Top" where it ends at a junction: take the "long" way with a nice ride around Red's Lake, or take the "shortcut" which skips Red's Lake but not all of the uphill sections. For me, Beach Cruiser has too many uphill sections, but the scenery is awesome. (I typically take the shortcut to Mountain View to skip so I can ride downhill and skip the uphill). Sep 4, 2015

I rode there on Sunday 2 Sep 2018 (a holiday) and found most trails needed a lot of maintenance. Some sections of trails were so sandy, riding them was difficult and not fun. I imagine a lot of money is spent on liability insurance which probably cuts into the money available for maintenance but that is no excuse. If necessary, I would pay more to get a better experience. I hope profit isn't such a motivation that quality isn't put down at a lower step. I am an advanced rider so didn't ride many beginner or intermediate trails so, in all fairness, maybe they are in better shape. I know on a holiday weekend there aren't maintenance crews working but I have ridden there on weekdays and I see no crews working. I did not see any evidence of any recent maintenance and, because I am an advanced rider, I rode many trails. To maintain a quality experience many qualified maintenance and construction employees are needed. Mammoth calls itself "The Premier Bike Park in the U.S." It could be, but currently, it definitely isn't. At this point I won't be coming back and won't be recommending Mammoth. Sep 5, 2018
