Overview
This route makes a full loop around an excellent natural feature. In some areas, the path is heavily laden with sandy pumice (typical in this area). The effort is rewarded while the natural wonder of the dome is beside you. Take some time to explore the dome when you visit.
Need to Know
Bring water and a snack.
Description
This large dome is located west of Highway 395, north of Mammoth Lakes. Ample parking is available and you can park closer to the dome if preferred. The path is unmistakable and may be taken in either direction around the dome.
In some areas, the path is heavily laden with pumice which is typical for the region. New riders may find pedaling too difficult in the deeper spots. There are a couple climbs to contend with but the effort is rewarded while the natural wonder of the dome is beside you.
History & Background
Located in the Inyo National Forest, the Obsidian Dome was created by a phreatic blast - the explosion that takes place when magma reaches the water table and turns the water to steam - and the magma pushes up and cools to create rock.
