Fruita, CO has emerged in recent years as a sweet alternative to Moab, UT for those traveling from Colorado's front range. The shorter drive times and wide variety of trail options makes it a great family spot.

Check out the town's newly revamped website gofruita.com for an overview of all the recreation opportunities in the area.

Local Info

In the Kokopelli Trail area, check out the incredible intro ride, Rustler's Loop for a good family experience. Or for a less family-oriented ride, ride Kokopelli Loops - Mary's, Horsethief, Steve's, and Wranglers. Or, head out to 18 road for a ton of great short options like 18 Road Trails - Zippity Loop, or Chutes & Ladders.

Camping & Lodging

Highline Lake State Park is a fantastic spot for families, and provides easy access to the Kokopelli Trail, and a lake to play in.

There's also plenty of camping near the 18 road trail system. The official campsite has 35 sites with fire rings, and requires a $10 fee. Check out the local BLM website for more info.

Camping is also allowed along the undeveloped BLM lands in this area. You'll see spots along the dirt road past the 18 road trailhead.

If you prefer beds to thermarests, there are several inexpensive hotel options just south of I-70. Two hotels that seem to be friendly to outdoor folks are:
La Quinta Fruita and Super 8 Fruita. Or, if you'd rather stay in a home than a motel/hotel, be sure to check out Fruita CrashPad's VRBO listings.

Outfitters, Tours, & Shuttles

Colorado Backcountry Biker offers self-guided, supported, multi-day hut-to-hut trips on the Uncompahgre Plateau and runs a full-service bike shop and rental facility. They're on the circle in downtown Fruita.

Over the Edge Sports is a famed local shop that offers full service repairs, demos & a wealth of knowledge about Fruita riding. Case in point...these guys put on the legendary Fruita Fat Tire Festival each Spring. OTE Sports is located smack downtown on the southeast corner of Aspen & Mulberry.

Chasing Epic offers all-inclusive, multi-day guided mountain bike vacations so you can explore all the Fruita classics. Their trips include lodging, meals, high-end bikes, guides and much more. Check them out at chasingepicmtb.com/fruita-g…

Additionally, if you are looking for advice or support for a bike trip here, definitely contact Western Spirit Cycling. Their guides have these trails dialed, plus they will get their massive support truck to camp, whip up amazing food, and keep the beer cold.

Food & Drink

Hot Tomato Cafe - the best pizza and beer for many miles, and in our professional opinion, the best food option in Fruita. But beware - it's usually PACKED during prime time!

For coffee, check out Aspen Street Coffee Company on E Aspen Ave (Main Street), just off the circle in town. People rave about the Mike's Mocha there.

Camilla's Kaffe (206 E Aspen Ave) generally get's a nod for basic burgers and Mexican.

Suds Brothers Brewery could be a good option for fresh beer and general pub fare, although it wasn't memorable when we tried it.

If Hot Tomato is too crowded, hop over to Copper Club. They're a craft brewer, and they seem to have adopted the bike theme. Additionally, you can just order some Hot Tomato pizza and have it delivered to Copper Club!

After the Ride: Local Favorites

Hot Tomato Cafe Just relocated to Denver from NJ. This is the best pizza in all of CO. Great crust. Love it. I will ride my bike and go to the gym 2x's a day just to eat this pizza. ;-)
124 N Mulberry St, Fruita CO — (970) 858-1117
Camilla's Kaffe I had half veggie sand and steak chilli. Excellent. Husband had grilled SW wrap he loved it. Great place!
206 E Aspen Ave, Fruita CO — (970) 858-7950
Munchies Friendly, local service. But you have to avoid the lunch hour on Saturday because of long, slow lines. They aren't set up to handle crowds. Decent burgers. Pizza has lame crust. Closed Sundays.
319 W Aspen Ave, Fruita CO — (970) 858-0953
El Tapatio Pretty good Mexican food. Pricey but definitely worth it with the large portion sizes. Greatly prices margaritas too!
402 Jurassic Ave, Fruita CO — (970) 858-1011
Dragon Treasure The service is amazing and the food is great too!
576 Kokopelli Blvd, Fruita CO — (970) 858-8655
Cafe Rio Delicious guacamole!
Costa Vida Sweet pork is to die for! Never had anything like it!
Buffalo Wild Wings Fried pickles, always good, liked the honey bbq, parm, and hot sauce's, the buffalo rub was tasty, and a couple beers to wash it all down. :)
Olive Garden It was packed. Never did get my iced tea. We finally left without our leftovers as no one returned to the table after we paid.
Outback Steakhouse Great food. Love the Sirloin Steak with Shrimp on the barbie, delish.
Famous Dave's This place always has the best bbq, and the bartenders rock!
Bamboo City Bamboo City is a great restaurant! We usually order 3-4 entrees for 5 people and it is still a lot of food:) Staff is super friendly and the food is rock solid!
2472 F RD, Grand Junction CO — (970) 242-0283
Chili's Grill & Bar Check in & get a free order of chips & salsa
Noodles & Company No wifi! Forget getting a few emails sent at lunch. Un-American. ;)

McAlister's Deli Their cheddar broccoli soup is the best I've ever had!
Chick-fil-A Great good and service
