Overview

The Klickitat River Trail is a good beginner mountain biking trail for those who are comfortable on a bike but who are new to off-road biking.

Bike Sections

Description

If starting from the Lyle, WA end of the trail, riders should expect to find loose pebbly-gravel for the first several miles as they ride along the banks of the Klickitat River. The Klickitat Trail: Klickitat River Segment of the trail follows along the Klickitat River for roughly 10 miles. At the 10-mile mark, the trail ends on State Route 142. State Route 142 is open to automobile access. From here, riders have several different options available to them:

1) Turn around and treat this as an out-and-back ride. This will result in a 20-mile round trip ride back to the Lyle parking lot.
1a) The Klickitat Trail: Klickitat River Segment is easily shuttle-able as well. The trail follows the river and State Route 142 pretty closely, so if riders only wanted to ride one way, they could park a car in Pitt and at Lyle, and ride one direction from either parking lot.

2) If continuing on, riders will have to ride roughly three miles along the State Road 142 - Klickitat Trail Connector before reaching the town of Klickitat where the second part of the Klickitat Trail: Swale Canyon Segment begins.

The trailhead for this second segment of the Klickitat Trail is a small gravel lot that lies a short ways down a side road off of State Route 142. Riders can also choose to skip the Klickitat Trail: Klickitat River Segment of the trail and begin along the Klickitat Trail: Swale Canyon Segment instead by parking at the noted parking lot in Pitt, WA.

The trail goes south, threading through Swale Canyon before coming out into the open, rolling hills of farmland north of the Columbia River. It eventually terminates somewhat randomly at the junction of Centerville Highway and Uecker Road.

See the Klickitat Trail: Swale Canyon Segment for more details.

The singletrack, although flat and simple, is pretty legit for a rail-trail.
