Description

This trail starts at the scenic Eibsee Lake. From the Eibsee, take the gravel forest path south just beyond the boat ramp which climbs steeply. You'll climb about 550 m (1800 ft) to the Hochtörlehütte (High Thorn Hut) on the side of the Zugspitze, which is the highest mountain in Germany at 2962 m (9718 ft). The path is fairly wide since trails less than 2 meters in width are generally closed to bikes in Bavaria.

As you climb above the Eibsee, you'll have excellent views of the Eibsee, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the surrounding German countryside to the north. Just before the top of the climb, you'll pass into Austria and at the top of the climb is the Hochtörlehütte. Here you can stop for the meal and appropriate beverage that you've earned during the climb.

From the Hochtörlehütte, you get to go downhill for about two miles into the tiny village of Obermoos, Austria. From Obermoos, you can take the Austrian cable car to the top of the Zugspitze in case you missed the chance to take the German cable car from Eibsee to the Zugspitze.

From Obermoos, you can reach the center of the town of Ehrwald via the street Zugspitzestraße which is a further two miles downhill. There are a number of other well-marked routes that connect through Ehrwald.

Sometimes you'll find that spiders have left webs bridging the trails overnight. There are spiders and then there are SPIDERS. Be mindful of man eating spiders along the Wettersteinrunde.
