Family Friendly Both the Quarry Lakes and Coyote Hills regional parks are great places for kids to ride and explore and are connected by the Alameda Creek Trail.

Description

Stretching from Niles Canyon near Fremont all the way to the shore of San Francisco Bay, this regional trail follows the banks of Alameda Creek. But wait, there are actually two trails. Cross over one of several bridges and a parallel trail, running along the north bank, is the gravel version of the paved South Bank Trail.

The trail was designed with under-crossings at major roads allowing continuous riding without crossing streets. Several trailheads provide starting points for a variety of rides of different lengths with connections to two regional parks, several community parks, and a federal wildlife refuge.

About two miles from the Niles Staging Area, on the north bank, is the Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area. This series of old gravel pits have been developed into a park for picnicking, swimming, and fishing, with trails for hiking and biking. The Isherwood Staging Area is located next to this park.

Directly south of the Alameda Creek Staging Area and about five miles from Quarry Lakes is the Coyote Hills regional park with its own network of paved, gravel, and dirt trails.

The paved South Bank Trail ends in the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge created from former salt evaporation ponds. The trail merges with the gravel Shoreline Trail which continues south towards the Dumbarton Bridge.
