Overview

Waterfall Cutoff Trail 638 offers one of the only non-motorized singletrack trails in the Cement Creek area which helps in making this a quieter ride. Great views, nice downhill and fun traversing abound on this ride. The initial uphill on Warm Springs Trail 406 and Walrod Gulch Trail 412 is tough with some hike-a-bike, but you'll be rewarded with downhill later on once you get to Waterfall Cutoff Trail 638.

Need to Know

The entrance to this trail can be a bit tricky to find as the signs are deliberately not posted right at the trail junctions to discourage motos from trying to ride this trail. Rather, the trail sign is posted several hundred yards from the trail junctions.

Description

Start by parking at the Deadman's Gulch parking area or somewhere nearby off of Cement Creek Road. Ride west on Cement Creek road until you get to Warm Springs Trail 406. Follow Warm Springs Trail 406 then take Walrod Gulch Trail 412 up to 405.2B. After a short uphill through the forest on 405.2B, you'll ride into a meadow and find yourself soon at a trail junction.

There is a sign and an apparent trail pointing to your left for the continuation of 405.2B, but don't turn left here. Straight ahead there will be a faint trail through the grass. 100 yards down this trail will be a forest service sign for Waterfall Cutoff Trail 638. The sign is deliberately placed 100 yards or so off the main junction to discourage motorbikes from trying to ride this trail since it's non-motorized.

Enjoy the ups and downs on this trail and some of the great views as Crested Butte Mountain Bike Club has done some recent work on this trail. The trail can be narrow at times as it traverses some of the steep slopes, so pay attention! Near the end, you'll cross a stream and see another forest service sign for Waterfall Cutoff Trail 638 in the gully where the trail will seemingly end. Climb out of the gully and look for The Waterfall Creek Trail 555 maybe 20 yards to the east.

Take a right on Waterfall Creek Trail 555 and ride this down to Upper Cement Creek Trail. Take a right on Upper Cement Creek Trail. Follow this until it ends at Cement Creek Road. From here, you'll only be about 1.3 mi from the Deadman's Gulch parking area and back to your car.
