Overview

The Rippey Springs Loop is a great Salmon ride. Good challenging climbs and sections of "flow" trail and downhills that are as tough as you want to make them.

Singletrack is all dirt through rolling sage hills. Wildflowers can be spectacular and, during late fall, wildlife abounds. Huge views of the Beaverhead mountains across the valley are a constant and get better as you go up in elevation.

Route finding is tricky for first time riders here. Pay attention, watch for cairns, look in the distance for the trail. Or ask at our local shop, theHUB, if anyone wants to be your guide.

Cows are present from mid-May to mid-September; expect dust and pocks in the trail.

Best season is spring and fall after the rains settle the dust back down.

Description

The Rippey Springs Loop is best ridden clockwise. Singletrack sections are obvious once you are on them, the junctions are tricky and easy to miss.

If you have this ride on your phone app...use it and pay attention to the trail signs. Otherwise find a local rider to show you the way. This is a great loop but very tough to follow w/o help.

Rippey Springs Loop follows several different cow trails and some two-track on the eastern end.

Ride tricky spots (in order of appearance):
1: At the trailhead, hang a right just after going through the gate and crossing the wash. Singletrack heads around the small hill there.
2: At the 2nd stream/wash crossing go left and down through the tall sage. Do not go up into the narrow canyon; this is the downhill later.
3: Watch for a cairn on a low ridge; head up this ridge looking for new cut trail around the landowners fence. The reroute contours across a hillside then drops to some trees and a gate in the fence.
4: Singletrack meets two-track; go left and down the road, cross the wash (water there in spring), just after a dry pond look to the right for a cairn and singletrack climbing perpendicular from the road. This is the Baker Creek Trail.
5: Stay on the trail to the left of the Aspens.

The downhill in Rippy Canyon could be gone up and the trail taken the opposite direction. We went the suggested way, but other way'd be more flowy.

Great "exploratory" ride with lots of variety. Download the map and use it! There are lots of other trail options that branch off not on this map. 11.8mi — 3h 15m
