Royal John Mine Road (RJM) is a major access point to the Southern Black Range and the Gila National Forest. The road starts off as a paved doubletrack experience off of the highway and becomes a dirt road within the first couple of miles. The majority of the road will be a relentless grind of a climb into the mountain range.

The first six miles of the road goes through private ranch land, so stay on the road. At about six miles up the road crosses into National Forest Land and you are able to access other Forest Service Roads and ATV trails. The road eventually crosses the Black Range Crest Trail #79 and the Continental Divide Trail. After crossing the Black Range Crest Trail #79, the road transitions into private land and the land owner does not appreciate public use, so it is best to avoid going beyond the Crest Trail.
