There may be some dirt bikes and jeeps, but not many in this remote area.

A convenient place to start is Dorchester Campground, but you can start anywhere you want along Rd. 742. You can drive higher and start 100 yards past Bowman Creek Trailhead, which saves you three miles and 250 feet of vertical.

At Bowman Creek, the climb gets steeper, but it is still gradual along the road. The big reward is when you get up to Taylor Pass where the views are amazing and you can connect to the gentle trails on the high plateau above tree line. You can go north to the Richmond Hill and Gold Hill Rd. Or, you can go south to Star Pass.

Both of these sections make up the middle of the epic Grand Traverse ski/run/bike route between Aspen and Crested Butte.
