Overview

This loop travels on the exterior trails around Prompton Lake in a counter-clockwise direction, starting near the dam. The tough singletrack will challenge your skills and also offers many opportunities to extend or shorten your ride.

Need to Know

Despite all the rocky trails, this trail system does not drain particularly well and can be muddy. Dress in bright colors if riding during fall hunting seasons. Bring a map, as trail navigation can be challenging with many intersections.

Description

Parking is available near Prompton Dam off the south end of Creek Rd (Rt 170). Temporary restrooms are available at the parking area, as well as picnic tables and a disc golf course.

Head south out of the parking area towards the dam, which you'll ride across to access the Hemlock Trail. The Hemlock Trail climbs some rocky singletrack, and you'll see a lot more of this type of terrain as you ride this trail system. If you're up for some additional rocky challenge, take a left and add in the Bone Ridge Trail loop.

From Hemlock Trail, stay right at most intersections to connect into High Ledge Trail, then Sugar Shack Trail, and Eagle Pass Trail. You'll be riding north, parallel to Prompton Lake, over rocky, hilly forest land and occasionally across open fields. Stay right onto the outer loops that connect Pine Creek Trail and Blueberry Trail, and continue on the fun and technical challenge of Cliff Trail and Sidewinder.

At the bottom of Sidewinder, turn right (N) onto East Shore Trail. This trail widens to doubletrack and spits you out onto Beech Grove Rd. Stay left onto Beech Grove Rd, and another left onto Creek Rd. Follow the signs to the radio control airport and field, where you'll connect on the south end to West Shore Trail. Follow the rocky and root-filled singletrack south for nearly four miles, eventually connecting you back to the main parking lot.

History & Background

Prompton State Park is a 1500-acre tract of land shared by the Pa. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers. It contains a 280-acre lake. This park, which was established in 1962, is managed by the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, while the lake and dam are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The entire park is available to the public for various activities that include: hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, backcountry skiing, paddling, fishing, hunting, geo-caching, and disc golf.

Prompton State Park provides boat launching and picnicking facilities, as well as a radio control airfield and a disc golf course. Over twenty miles of hiking trails surround the lake, maintained by the Friends of Prompton State Park volunteers.

The park is open every day of the year, sunrise to sunset. Day use areas close at dusk.
