Overview

The overall Quemahoning (Que) Trail forms a 16-mile loop around the Quemahoning Reservoir with multiple access points. This is broken into multiple listings, split by road interruptions or access points, to provide shorter, section-specific descriptions. This ride links them all together in a counterclockwise direction.

Need to Know

The start/end of the loop is designated at the Conemaugh Twp Parking lot, just north of the Family Recreation Area. The loop or any shorter out and backs can be started from any of the access points.

There is a use fee at the Family Recreation Area in season

Description

This ride listing starts at the Conemaugh Township parking lot along Quemahoning Dam Road, north of the Family Recreation Area and provides direct access onto the Trail. The first 2.5 miles (counterclockwise) of the ride follows easier terrain creating a more beginner out and back opportunity. A clockwise start leads riders into some of the more technical intermediate rocky areas, descents, and climbs. Birdman, Plank, and Que Dam Roads offer flatter bailout return segments for CCW out and back rides to the loop midpoint at Birdman Connector.

This trail was designed to provide the easiest initial route around the whole reservoir and a base for planned future trails to branch off into more advanced terrain. See individual Trail listings for specific descriptions.

History & Background

The trail system is being developed in cooperation with the Cambria Somerset Authority, which purchased this and other facilities from Bethlehem Steel Corporation (successor to Cambria Iron) in 2000 as an industrial water supply along with opening them to public recreation.
