Due to the immensely difficult and unrideable nature of the first two-thirds of Dog Slaughter Creek, it's recommended that riders begin at the westernmost trailhead and use the Dog Slaughter Connector to ride only the western 1.3 miles of trail.

Description

If you heeded the recommendation and began your ride at the westernmost trailhead, the access onto Dog Slaughter Trail begins deceptively easy, but quickly gets rough. Boulders, roots, hemlock, and rhododendron make traveling by mountain bike very challenging!

The scenery is well worth the struggle though. The creek is usually very clear and absolutely beautiful. With good water flow, the area can take on a misty fog-like atmosphere giving the impression of a rain forest.

Dog Slaughter Falls is the highlight of this trail. Years of water carving its way into the rock has left a horseshoe shaped feature resembling a very miniature Niagara Falls (when at heavy flow).

The final 0.2 miles wander around and over large boulders until in connects to Sheltowee Trace NRT: Section 27.
