Description

This is one of my favorite trails in this State Forest! I usually ride Trail #4A first, coming from Moose Rd., then take in the view of the lake, and backtrack a few hundred feet to take the fork to the right.

Trail #4 has long smooth downhill runs that are best heading north. Starting at the largest lake/pond in Carlton Hill, this trail crosses the pipeline easement and enters the woods traveling north. It gradually gets steeper as you pick up speed, gently zig-zagging down the hill. It turns left sharply scrubbing off some speed, and continues down the hill smooth as ever.

It reaches a muddy spot with huge, uneven boulders that form a makeshift bridge, and continues down the hill to cross a small creek and begin a decent-sized climb. Most of the way up that climb there's a right turn, with a downed tree that makes a perfect spot for an entire group to grab a seat. Get some rest, and continue the climb just within the treeline with a field to your right.

When you get to the top, lower your saddle and prepare to smile. This impossibly smooth trail blasts down the hill, over a few gentle rollers, through a small creek, and through a small stand of pines before dumping you back out onto Moose Rd.
