Description

Lair of the Bear starts as an understated opening in the trees off of Road 2300. Most often, it's ridden as a follow up to Whoopsie Woodle, and they do have a similar make-you-work-through-the-turns feel, though things get noticeably steeper in "the lair."

Follow this young singletrack through the woods as it winds back and forth over dips and up climbs. Keep an eye out for a trail splitting to the right off of a left hand turn. If you hit a logging road, you missed the turn and should retrace your steps.

From here, Lair of the Bear pretends to continue as an undemanding pedal through the trees, but in reality you'll quickly be headed for a steep plunge into the hollow below. The initial drop in elevation is followed by a quirky rise, and it's easy to get your momentum wrong the first time. Ahead, the trail follows a narrow bench that feels exposed as it heads to the bottom where a bridge spans the creek.

Past the bridge, the singletrack dips and climbs abruptly around a clearcut. Pay attention to the trail, as some spots are tight and tricky. The trail soon comes to its end on an old roadbed that feeds into Atomic Dog. Make sure to check back up the trail for oncoming riders before proceeding.
