Catamount is a two-way multi-use trail. Expect traffic in both directions. A parking pass for Silver Falls State Park is required. Unfortunately, you'll have to drive a little ways down the Silver Falls Highway to purchase a day pass for $5 or a year pass for $30 at one of the falls parking lots. Don't worry, it's not far.
You can buy them online also, and they are good for any Oregon State Park.
Description
This new trail has a lot to offer! Without feeling overly contrived or artificial, this trail has a lot of twists and turns, bumps and bruises to offer riders. Intended to be ridden "downhill," or east to west, the trail can nonetheless be ridden "uphill" too. Check out the
Catamount Trail Loop for a road climb to descent option.
Having officially opened on May 1, 2016, the trail is currently still in a very fresh state. That being said, it shows loads and loads of potential. It runs through a drop dead gorgeous forest, crosses a few streams, and offers a great time. Some of the neatest parts are where the trail runs alongside ancient, fallen trees.
Built entirely by volunteers, the trail is very impressive. While most definitely technical and demanding, it is not overly excruciating, balancing bends and bumps in the trail with small downhills and brief straightaways.
The trail is fairly straightforward to follow. Signs are at both ends and the few trails that join up with it. When in doubt, pink paw prints painted on signs and gate posts will show you the way.
