Heavenly Pass is a surprise. One doesn't expect much from desert scenery, but this is an amazing place. Marvelous geology and lots of wildlife, particularly birds. Large owls live here as well as vultures and red-tailed hawks. At sunset, the sky is filled with swallows.

The north end of the trail has a grade that tops 30% and is loose on loose gravel that I've never seen anyone attempt to ride up. It is rideable down, but control is minimal, more like a ski run than a bike ride.

The south section is very steep and has some gravelly, washed-out areas, but there is much more here that is rideable, with fun, tight switchbacks and great views across the valley.

If you're a very strong rider, riding south to north will let you ride the whole way, but you'll be grinding out a tough climb on what is the fun part going the other direction. If you go north to south, you'll almost certainly be HABing the north slope up to the saddle but the ride down the south slope is a sketchy blast.
