Overview

The premier alpine experience in Del Norte. Ride up to the beautiful Frisco Lakes and enjoy the ripping descent on your way home.

From Del Norte, head SW on the Frisco Creek road. Park at the end of the road and make sure to dive off to left at the TH (West Frisco is a 2-track 4-wheeler trail). Cross the creek and follow the trail to the top - no junctions until you reach the lake. This is a great out-and-back ride for all levels of riders.

Description

The lower 3 miles are incredible aspen/pine forest riding, while the upper half of the trail dances in and out of tree line. This trail is very popular with horsemen during the big game hunting season. The trail starts in a mixed conifer/aspen stand and continues south along the Middle Frisco Creek until you reach San Francisco Lakes.

The lakes are located at an open sub-alpine meadow below a ridge running east and west between Pintada Mountain and Bennett Mountain. The trail continues past the lakes intersecting with FDT#850.

Bennett Mountain stands above 13,000 feet and is referred to as Ole Baldy. Long ago, when the Spaniards first came to the San Luis Valley, they had named Ole Baldy Pintada Mountain. Later, the miners changed the name to Bennett Mountain (Pintada Mountain). You can only see Pintada Mountain from Monte Vista.

Pretty fun trail, climb was pretty dang tough. The lake at the end was pretty nice, and the downhill was fun, overall I'd give it 3.5 out of 5. 12.6mi — 2h 20m
