A proper DH or long-travel trail/enduro bike is highly recommended for this trail.

Description

Raw Hide is by far the most technically demanding trail at the Steamboat Bike Park. From the top of the gondola, hang a left and look for the entrance to Raw Hide next to the top of the Thunderhead Express Chair.

The trail starts out through some sweeping turns and seems tame enough, but that tameness quickly evaporates upon arriving at what must be a filter feature. If you're not comfortable with this feature, exit the trail and hike back to the summit because things only get rowdier as you go.

The filter feature is a large (~5 foot) rock face that can either be launched as a drop or rolled with 100% commitment. Don't go trying to roll this one on your XC hardtail with the saddle up your rear end - it won't end well. Assumring you've cleared this first feature, get ready for more rowdy fun.

The trail ducks into the woods and features a sequence of extremely steep, rocky switchbacks that will have you hooting and hollering if you love technical riding. Next, you'll pop out onto an access road - follow it and look for rawhide to re enter the woods to the left via a wooden/rock drop.

Hold on as you bomb through the woods at warp speeds over very technical root and rock strewn terrain. Another series of stomach tightening switchbacks leads to another clearing and access road. Continue across the access road, back into the woods and hang on. Eventually, you'll pop out of the woods onto a boardwalk that crosses a drainage. Just ahead is the final feature with three options:
  • Stay right for an 8 foot ladder drop.
  • Keep to the middle for a mellow, almost rollable ladder drop.
  • Stay left for a ride around.

After the drops, there's a nice run out that leads into a fun right-hand hip jump to put the icing on the cake. From here, head down Wrangler Gulch to Buckin' Bronc to get back to the base area.
