Description

This amazing trail is great in either direction. On the way up there are smooth fast sections, rock gardens and one difficult steep pitch as the trail drops into, out of and across the canyon bottom. On the way down you float through the rock gardens and fly off built up jumps. The natural shelf and old dam in the bottom of the canyon make great launches of a bit over 2 feet with nice clean run outs. The very bottom of the trail has nice flowing turns that work back and forth across the canyon before a final rocky, twisty bit to get back to the trailhead.

This trail runs mostly north to south with the trailhead parking at the north end and the Kirtland Air Force Base withdrawal area at the south end. Be sure not to cross into the KAFB land as they do periodically enforce it and at least on the Otero Canyon trail the boundary is signed quite well, you would have a hard time pleading ignorance.

Riding off small drop off

Un-natural ledge drop, this one can be difficult to see the first time you come flying down the trail, meaning you could take it by accident like I did. No worries though, the take off is clean and the landing smooth.

Natural ledge drop in the bottom of the canyon, you could ride around it but why?
