Need to Know
Vault toilets are available at the Upper and Lower Pinal Peak Campgrounds at the top and at the CCC Trailhead at the bottom. Topo Joe's in Globe offers a shuttle service to transport riders and their bikes to the
Ferndell Trailhead or any other downhill trailheads in the Pinals.
Description
Like all the trails in the Pinal Mountains, Sixshooter Canyon is open in any direction, but is most popular with cyclists as a downhill route. Expect hikers on this popular trail.
From the
Ferndell Trailhead, the Sixshooter Canyon Trail immediately plunges down smooth but very steep singletrack to the junction with the Telephone Trail at the bottom of the canyon. It then enters a gentle climb along the south wall of the canyon on smooth, flowing singletrack with expansive views of the city of Globe, the Four Peaks, and the Sierra Ancha. The switchbacks at the end of the traverse are smooth and flowy but narrow and exposed; passable to an intermediate mountain biker who doesn't spare the front brake, but more rewarding to advanced riders.
The descent brings you to the bottom of the canyon, where large rocky drop-offs and narrow gaps between boulders will force all but expert technical riders to dismount for long stretches. Autumn visitors, at least, will enjoy the colorful oak and maple foliage too much to mind the slower pace. Just past a fence gate (close it when you're done, as this area is used for cattle grazing), the trail joins Forest Road 112. You can take the forest road back to the CCC Trailhead, or cross the road to the loose, rocky singletrack of the Lower Sixshooter Trail.
