Description

Rampage is a "new" trail in 2025. It's in the upper, motorized section above Lunch Loops in the Bangs Canyon area.

The easiest way to ride this trail is a 7.5-mile loop from the 3rd Flats Day Use Area. Starting from Quad Rocker Loop to Upper Cedar Point Road, the entry fee is a 1-mile, 600-foot climb in the difficult, rock-strewn terrain typical of this area.

At the top of Upper Cedar Point Road, you'll reach a small prominence at 6400 feet with a 360-degree view and the start of Rampage proper. The entrance features a short downhill with some double black features, including some steep rock rolls and artificial ramps. But if you were looking forward to a long downhill, you've got a quick 120 ft climb that feels longer and more difficult than it is after the long entry from the 3rd Flats trailhead.

Once you reach the top of this quick little climb, the first big (500 ft) downhill fun begins. You're descending through an area with thick cover of juniper and other scrubby bushes, different from the more desert-like lower reaches of Lunch Loops. The soil seems grippier too, with a good helping of short sections of slick rock and other rocky obstacles. The descent follows at times the cliff overlooking Bangs Canyon and at times the ridge line. The descent is peppered with technical features such as rock gardens, loose rocks, and steps up/down; as well as short uphill reversals, but otherwise you can pick up some real speed, and maybe a little air.

At the bottom of this descent you turn back uphill for another steepish climb, this time along the edge overlooking Billings Canyon. From the top of this second climb, you enter a long, steeply descending chute through a wash packed with rock rolls and other rocky technical features. At the bottom of the wash there is a short flat section and then more technical descending down to Upper Billings Canyon Road.

If you're taking the "easy" loop back to the 3rd Flats Day Use Area, turn right to climb up Upper Billings Canyon Road to the Tabeguache Trail and Little Park Road. If you've followed this easy loop as described, you've packed 1500 feet of technical climbing and descending into the 7.5 miles. If this isn't enough, you've easily got over 100 miles of trails between Lunch Loops and Bangs Canyon to fill your appetite.
